Organizations all over the nation are coming together to reduce their environmental footprint. If you’re looking to go onboard the green movement, you can start with a little, yet unexpected, change: investing in dishwashers.
Many times, you’ve heard that compared with washing the dishes by hand, using the dishwasher tends to be more energy or water-efficient. But, what is the reality behind these claims?
We looked into the “using a dishwasher is more efficient” claim to present you with data that you can take into account when deciding to purchase dishwashers.
A diverse group of experts all agree that, where Nature is concerned, it’s best to leave dishwashing to the machines. This group includes those from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Program, Consumer Reports, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
The central premise is that dishwashers are the best option from an environmental perspective, provided that any remaining food is scraped off before putting the dishes in the dishwasher and that the machines are turned on only when they are full. This is because dishwashers have grown so energy- and water-efficient now that it is somewhat tricky for hand washing to beat them.
This is especially true for Energy Star-certified models. These machines just keep needing less and less energy and water as manufacturers continuously improve appliance standards, even as consumers get increasingly better at using them.
Jonah Schein, a technical coordinator at EPA’s WaterSense program, says: “In order to wash the same amount of dishes that can fit in a single load of a full-sized dishwasher, and use less water, you would need to be able to wash eight full place settings and still limit the total amount of time that the faucet was running to less than two minutes.”
The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy seconds this, saying that modern dishwashers can outperform all except the most frugal of hand washers, especially with models that integrate energy-saving features.
